About
Learn about the history of the Golden Isles Youth Orchestra and meet the people who contribute to its success.
Our Story
It was Beethoven who said, “Music can change the world.” That is the power of music. The Golden Isles Youth Orchestra, aims to harness that power and change young minds through music.
Founded in 2005 by the Coastal Symphony of Georgia, The Golden Isles Youth Orchestra (GIYO) — formerly called the Coastal Youth Symphony — was established to introduce orchestral music to, and enhance musical education for, the children of Glynn County and the surrounding areas.
Becoming a separate entity in 2014, GIYO currently includes a graded program with the Philharmonia, a full orchestra with strings, winds, and percussion; Symphonette, a strings intermediate orchestra; in-school instructional pods; and String-On!, a week-long introductory program. Additionally, GIYO has several ensembles at different levels of proficiency and a strings lessons program. GIYO is proud of the diversity in age, gender, race, and economic status that exists among participants at all levels.
