Ensembles

Philharmonia

Philharmonia, conducted by Maestro Jorge Peña, is an auditioned top orchestra for area musicians ages 12-21. This performing orchestra contains strings, woodwinds, brass, and percussion.

• ​The orchestra performs three concerts a year – Winter and Spring Concerts and the Fall Fundraising Recital.
• This orchestra plays classical and pops music at Level 4 and up.
• Students are expected to practice daily.
• Students rehearse Mondays from 5:30-8:00PM during the school year.
• Students are also expected to attend sectionals each semester and attend Orchestra Summer Camp in July.
• Students are expected to be in their school’s music ensemble and/or be taking private lessons with GIYO or another qualified teacher.

Chamber Ensemble

The Chamber Ensemble musicians play at numerous special events throughout the year. These accomplished GIYO musicians have the opportunity to perform and explore the role of professional musicians while still in high school.

Chamber Ensemble is comprised of current Philharmonia musicians who show strong commitment to the orchestra, and who are capable of the discipline necessary to serve as an extension of the orchestra through community outreach. They are dedicated to performing a high level of classical music.

In addition to the consistent attendance at Philharmonia rehearsals, the musicians will have weekly rehearsals with the ensemble director. Chamber Ensemble musicians also have the opportunity to participate in sectionals and master classes with professional coaches. Members usually take regular private lessons and maintain leadership responsibilities within the orchestra.

Symphonette

Symphonette offers strings musicians who have completed at least a year of instruction the opportunity to play in an intermediate ensemble. Students need to be comfortable reading music and playing 1 to 2 octave scales in D, A, G, C, and F major.  Participation in Symphonette qualifies musicians for the GIYO subsidized private and semi-private lesson program. All members are encouraged to take private lessons and participate in their school orchestra programs. 

Symphonette gives student musicians a taste of orchestral performance. As the training orchestra for Philharmonia, musicians still adhere to the same music education standards with focus on skill building and learning more about formal performance.

Symphonette rehearsals are held from 6:45-8:00 p.m. on Mondays​

Prelude

Prelude offers young strings musicians who have completed less than a year of instruction the opportunity to play and learn in a beginner ensemble.  Participation in Symphonette can also qualify musicians for the GIYO subsidized private and semi-private lesson program. All members are encouraged to take private lessons and participate in their school orchestra programs. 

Prelude gives student musicians their first taste of orchestral performance. As the training orchestra for Symphonette, musicians still adhere to the same music education standards with focus on skill building and learning more about formal performance.

Prelude rehearsals are held from 5:30-6:30 p.m. on Mondays​
