Instruction Opportunities
Learn about the exciting instruction opportunities GIYO offers.
In addition to ensemble performance, GIYO offers instructional programs that introduce students to orchestral instruments and support their musical development.
String-On!
A week-long introduction to orchestral string instruments for elementary students.
In-School Pods
Small group instruction for students who want to continue learning after participating in String-On!
Lessons
Subsidized lessons for GIYO ensemble members to strengthen their skills and musical growth.
Camps
Two immersive summer camps allow students to deepen their skills through intensive instruction and ensemble performance.
String-On!
GIYO’s fifth-grade outreach program, String-On! focuses on learning to play classical music on an orchestra string. Science concepts, such as sound velocity, vibration, pitch, wave, frequency, the Doppler Effect, amplitude and sound pressure, are taught as part of this ears-on and hands-on program.
String-On!, our week-long introduction to instrumental music, has visited all of the public schools in Glynn County this school year! In addition, we have held String-On! events at Frederica Academy, St Francis Xavier, and Sugarmill Elementary in Camden County.
We are currently scheduling String-On! for the next school year. For further information, please contact Suzanne Morrison, General Manager, at admin@giyo.org.
In-School Pods
GIYO is pleased to partner with area schools to offer in-school strings instruction during or after school. Many of these school pods form following a successful String-On! Program leading to student interest in ongoing instruction. The once weekly program is a group lesson format and lays the foundation for young musicians to participate in Middle School Orchestra (if offered) or audition for Symphonette. GIYO provides instruments, music stands, instructional music, and an instructor at participating schools. At the high school level, these pods provide additional instruction to enhance their readiness for Philharmonia.
Currently we have active pods/in-school instruction at:
- Glynn Academy
- Burroughs Molette Elementary
- St. Simons Elementary
- St Francis Xavier
- Oglethorpe Point Elementary
- Sugermill Elementary School (Camden County)
Lessons
All musicians in good standing in either the Symphonette or Philharmonia orchestras are eligible to participate in GIYO lessons.
A Gift From the Community
Because of the limited orchestra classes in Glynn County Schools, the GIYO Board annually raises money from local donors and family foundations to subsidize orchestra instruments and lessons.
Lessons are held bi-weekly on Saturdays on the Glynn Academy campus from 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. Students are encouraged to have a minimum of seven lessons per semester. Lessons can be purchased as you go at $25 per each hour-long session, or a seven-lesson package per semester at $150. Use the link below to sign up.

Camps
Each summer, GIYO is pleased to offer two camps:
Philharmonia Summer Intensive Camp
This intensive camp includes daily individual lessons, ensemble coaching, music theory and appreciation, and full orchestra rehearsals. Students are taught by professional orchestral musicians. This camp is held in July at the Coastal College of Georgia.
Current Philharmonia members and students interested in joining the orchestra are strongly encouraged to attend this camp. Musicians who are visiting the area may attend camp. Rising 9th graders and above have the option to stay overnight in the College of Coastal Georgia’s beautiful residence hall. Younger students may participate in camp as day students. There is a nominal fee to attend, although fees may be waived, if needed.
Students who are not currently part of a GIYO program must submit a recommendation from their music teacher and may be asked to audition for placement in the correct ensemble.
For additional information and to schedule a time for your audition (if needed) contact: julycamp@giyo.org
Beginner/Intermediate June Camp
Our beginner/intermediate strings camp is open to rising 4th graders to high school students who are novice musicians or just need a bit more practice before auditioning for the Philharmonia. This camp is held in July.
Students who are not part of a GIYO program must submit a recommendation from their music teacher and may be asked to audition for placement in the correct ensemble. There is a nominal fee to attend, although fees may be waived if needed.
